Gabriel Abrantes

 
   
 

Born in North Carolina, United States, in 1984. In 2006 he received his BA in Cinema and Visual Arts at The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science
and Art, in New York. In 2005/2006 studied at L’Ecole National des Beaux-Arts, in Paris and in 2007 studied at Le Frenesoy Studio National des Arts
Contemporains, Tourcoing, France.
Liberdade won the prize for RESET Best Short Film Director at Indie Lisboa 2011. A History of Mutual Respect won the Pardino d’Oro for Best Short film at
Locarno Film Festival 2010, Prémio Media Recording for Best Portuguese Film at Indie Lisboa ’10, KODAK Cinelabs Prize at EXPIFF Bucharest, 2010, and
Prémio dos Cineclubes at Festival Luso Brasileiro, St. Maria da Feira. Visionary Iraq won the New Talent Fnac Award at Indie Lisboa’09. He won the EDP Novos Artistas Prize in 2009 for his video-instalation Too Many Daddies, Mommies and Babies. His film Olympia I & II (co-directed with Katie Widloski) also won the KODAK Cinelabs at EXPIFF Bucharest, 2010.
A History of Mutual Respect was considered one of the Best films of 2010 by Sight & Sound Magazine, British Film Institute. Visionary Iraq was considered
one of the Best films of 2010 by ArtForum and Purple Magazine.
Currently living and working in Lisbon, he is preparing his next films, focusing on the new identities, new power dynamics, and new narratives that are being
forged as a result of the rapid economic development of non-occidental nations.
