In 2004 the Festival has exhibited some music videos that made part of the “Electric Guitar” program. Since then, the necessity and interest on creating a competition entirely dedicated to this kind of cinema emerged. A new section was born two years latter: the Music Videos Competition. In a little over years (the first channel dedicated to this phenomenon, appeared in 1981), music videos, originally not much more than promotional vehicles for pop songs, have won artistic recognition and had established themselves in the audio-visual world as an entity in its own right. Today, we can say that music videos inspire not only cinema (visible, for instance, on/in the works of important film-makers such as Lars von Trier and Wong Kar Wai) but also the contemporary Arte , where in the 1990's the song format became a common theme of video art and for music itself. During that process, video has created its own “authors”, who have taken advantage of its potential to direct authentic small experimental and animation films, without losing sight of the main purpose of its function – to illustrate a song. Always trying to follow the evolution of the different kinds and ways of making cinema, the Festival has coming to integrate in its program sessions of music video directed by the main artist of this area, namely Michel Gondry, Spike Jonze, Chris Cunningham, Jonas Odell, Roman Coppola...In 2006, the Festival assumed a programme especially dedicated to rock/pop culture and to its colourful images and exploratory sounds.
